sleep, diet, exercise, love, & support = sanity.

Over the years, I've learned to monitor myself and my bipolar disorder.  I know my symptoms, and I know when I need to make some modifications in order to prevent myself from visiting "crazy-town".  Above everything, I need adequate sleep.  Along with getting in sufficient shut eye, I need to make sure I am eating properly.  I also feel healthiest (both mentally and physically) when I stick to some sort of exercise regimen.  But along with sleep, diet, and exercise, there is one last thing I could not survive without - love and support from my family and friends.

As I thought about this, I realized that not one of these things - sleep, diet, exercise, and the love and support of others - is unique to me.  These necessities aren't even specific to those of us with mood disorders.  No human being can be their best self without adequate sleep, proper nutrition, and some form of exercise.  And while it is important to find one's own path in life, no journey can be complete if there is no one to share it with.
